If Lauren doesn't want me to I'll just do it anyway. I've done things he doesn't want me to before, he'll know why I'm doing it and he'll be fine with it. Even if it takes a bit. [Which would be hard, but nothing he can't handle. It's easier if he tells him after he already has a yes anyhow, because then there's nothing he can do about it.]

But the others... I can prove myself. I know I'm younger, I know people might not like it, but I can do just as good as they can. They'll see if they just let me! I can take care of myself, I can fight, I can do everything they can. I just need a chance to prove it!

Just to be clear, even if I say yes — if the Ringmaster says no, then I can’t take you.

If you’re a nightrunner, you have to follow what I tell you to do, and if the Ringmaster says we stop, we stop. You have to put other people in the Carnival before yourself, not just your brother. If there are people in trouble you don’t like, even people you hate, you don’t have a choice — you still have to save them.

You want to prove yourself? Prove yourself to the other nightrunners first. You’ll be working with them, depending on them, and if they won’t have you then you’re not going to be worth much of anything.

There are other ways to protect the Carnival. If you’re set on this one? That’s what I need from you.
