Obviously that man was not me and I would never hold some of the dreadful opinions he held, and yet I feel I must take responsibility for those bridges he burned, both before and after my unintentional stay with the Summer Court. I truly am sorry for any pain, suffering, or inconvenience that I've put you though.

Likewise, I must thank you for your actions in Portland. You were far too kind to me, more than I deserved, especially with regards to that cat nonsense.

DAY 158, EVENING - M A I L

KERNER ISLAND
Reira Akaba, today



Kerner island isn't very big, and the only dock got burned down a while ago. Some of the old buildings here are burned up too, but those were accidents.

Everyone here has a daemon that hasn't settled, because the 'spectres' can't see people until that happens, which makes them safe. They said spectres can't go across deep water, which is why they can use the island to make portals even though that means spectres happen.

The big building was where portals were made before, but there's open portals right now on the island. One goes to a world full of candy and the other one just goes to a normal looking place, and then another goes to . But there are old portal places where there are things like mushroom rings. Portals get closed after a while, and they're really hard to see unless you know where to look. The candyland one has lots of dirt outside, more than even the rest of the island.

Everyone makes it very messy, but there's still lots of plants. There's some trees, and a vine plant that makes fuzzy fruits with green stuff inside. They're kind of sour, but they're okay. The plant grows really fast and everywhere, and bugs like it a lot. There's white ones that are called sugar beetles, and shiny ones that are called fireflies.

There are other animals all over the island too. Like fuzzy long-leg things with little horns. I think my daemon can show everything better though. The fuzzy things get eaten I think, because they're scared of everyone.

There's a big lighthouse to keep boats away in the bad weather. The shores are safe, but spectres like people with settled daemons.

So most of everything is really safe unless you have a settled daemon.

[Left in Lambert's mailbox is a painted card, along with a very wrapped bottle with a lump. The card smells of pine needles, snow and a fireplace, and features Papyrus, waving enthusiastically ahead. Somehow there's boneprint snowflakes faintly falling against the pale background. Along the header and footer, the card reads:]

HI LAMBERT!!! I HOPE YOU'RE NOT HALF-ROCK SOON.

[ Given enough time to settle in, set up the lab (moon-side, thanks to fun with shadows), and at least enjoy a night or two of having a bed to himself, it's inevitable that Lambert will find a guest in his cabin.

It's well after dark, but not so late that Lambert isn't still up, poking about at his alchemy work, that he may sense another person suddenly arrive. Snow and pine in the air are enough to let him know who and that is definitely isn't Strange, since, scent aside, Childermass is the one who tends to show up silently, without bumbling or announcing himself. ]

[ It's after dark, and Lambert's winding down on his work for the day, when the smell of snow and pine hits his nose. He looks up from the list he's currently working on -- a few possibilities have been eliminated, and a few look more promising, so maybe they'll have something they can really start working on tomorrow -- and grins at the magician. ]

Hey. [ He cracks his neck to the side with a winch, then pushes his seat away from the table, waving a hand to extinguish the burner flame under one of the beakers. ] Sorry, Mr. Childermass, we're closed for the night. If you're looking for Strange, he's probably out there getting into trouble.

[ Because that is, he assumes, why Childermass is here. ]

[Her signature is so massive and florid that it fills up the rest of the paper. When they opens the box, they'll find a a ring. As stated, this ring will allow him to take on the outward appearance of anyone he has bested in combat. This can't cause him to get huge or anything, though - it's mostly an illusion effect.]

[Not quite knowing where his cabin was unfortunately, Reira waits until late in the holiday to leave something at the Nightrunner's tent instead...hoping that no one else will take the package, apparently. It seems to be a small bundle of cookies, along with a childishly painted card-the image seems to move slightly, and there's a note on the back.]

You have sheep horns, but you don't really seem like the sheep cards...so I decided this dragon would be better. It's a person and also a dragon! Like you are! And also it's sort of two things, because it's a fusion card...which is sort of what it's like to have a daemon, I think. You have two things that make one thing.

9S may or may not have gotten sat on by a stoned dragon as a result of Lambert smoking it, whining until the effects wore off and he gets stuck with having to drag Lambert's naked ass back indoors.

By far the worst of the three weed related experiences 9S has had this trip.]

Got this for you. Looks like we'll be working together from now on, so maybe this'll come in handy.

Also, I had some extra apples lying around, so go feed them to your horses or something.

TO BE HONEST, THEY PROBABLY WON'T DO MUCH TO PROTECT YOU AGAINST GETTING BRAINWASHED BY A HIGH FAE, BUT I HOPE YOU FIND THEM USEFUL ANYWAY.

[Indeed, enclosed with this message are two metal and leather bracers. Peridot informs him that he gets two because his job is so especially dangerous, but she guesses that if Lambert feels he only needs one, he could give the other to someone else that he thinks may need protecting. She may or may not be implying that he give one to Childermass.

The letter goes on to explain that the wrist guards are made of Magitite, a special metal that basically functions like a lightning rod for magic. It is specially crafted so that it can dampen incoming malicious spells (or neutralize minor spells entirely) by soaking up that magical energy before it can do harm, all without interfering with the wearer's own casting. The metal also kind of functions like a battery, in that it can store the magic it soaks up, and the wearer call upon that absorbed energy to help augment their own spells. Spells that are cast using the stored magic might even have bonus surprise effects added based on what type of energy was originally stored!]

[ And last on Childermass's creepy shadow-hopping gift delivery route is Lambert's cabin. Ultimately, the goal is to leave the package on the table for him to find and get out again, to carry on with the rest of his day. He steps in through a shadowy corner and pauses there, waiting, listening, to see if he's alone.

He might be.

There's no immediate sign of Lambert being in the living room area and that's enough to prompt him to cross the room to the table or counter or even the desk. He'll set a plainly wrapped package down — brown paper tied shut with colored twine and only marked with a tag with a 'C' on it —and then turn to head back the way he had arrived from. ]

[ This morning, as with every other morning since Childermass started up the ritual of sleeping over, Lambert had woken to an empty bed. It never gets any less disappointing every time, but he reminds himself even this is probably going to stop once they get back to business, so he might as well enjoy what he can get.

As Childermass's luck would have it -- perhaps he lingered in the shadows just a moment too long making sure Lambert was out, perhaps it was because he made the mistake of putting his back to the door -- now is when the door swings open without warning, revealing Lambert with an armful of bags, a scarf around his neck, and an utterly surprised expression when he realizes just who's inside his cabin.

He freezes in the doorway for half a beat, then relaxes, raising a brow. He steps in the rest of the way and shuts the door firmly behind him, and the rest of the Carnival outside with it. ]

Did you need something? [ From where he's standing, Childermass blocks his line of sight to the box on the desk, and he lifts a hand to start tugging his scarf loose. ]
